Free Energy from the Sun in Manila

SunEnergy Europe’s Joint Venture WEnergy has completed its first roof-mounted PV installation in Manila, Philippines. The utility Gigawatt Power on whose roof high up on the 6th floor the modules were mounted now uses the free sun delivery to cover its energy demand. Surplus energy production is fed into the grid – a favourable scheme for businesses in the Philippines since the government introduced Net Metering in 2013 for PV plants of 100 kW nominal power or less.

A few more days will pass before the first self-generated kilowatthour will go through Gigawatt’s cables since the building itself will only be finished by February. As construction site manager Fabian Weber says, “This is a good first project step for us in this region. With our PV experience and our German partner SunEnergy Europe in the background we are looking forward to realizing a number of interesting follow-up projects.”

The MoU which was agreed on by WEnergy, PALECO (Palawan Electric Cooperative) and the city government of Palawan’s province capital Puerto Princesa is one further step towards more PV power. The three parties are working on a hybrid power plant of 1.5 MWp installed capacity to cover the island’s energy demand.
